Welcome to the business department at BDHS.  Our courses are designed to introduce students to the exciting world of business.  Our courses integrate technology, teamwork and leadership as a part of our goal to prepare students for any career that they might choose.  Every job today is linked to business in some way and business skills are a requirment for all empoyers.  While studying business is ideal for students interested in careers related to technology, marketing, and management, it is just as beneficial for students looking to have fun while learning how to manage their money, use the latest software programs, and ultimately succeed in the real world.

Business Studies Course Pathways, Grades 9-12

 

Course Descriptions 

BTT1O:  Information and Communication Technology in Business, Open
This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills. Students will benefit across all courses, and throughout their high school years with the skills developed in this course.

 

BBI2O:  Introduction to Business, Open
This course introduces students to the world of business. Students will develop an understanding of the functions of business, including personal finance, accounting, marketing, information technology, human resources, production, and business.-management. This course builds a foundation for further studies in business, and helps students develop the business knowledge and skills they will need in their everyday lives. There may be an opportunity to visit a local business or business centres.

 

BAF3M:  Financial Accounting Fundamentals, College/University        
Students learn the language of business, emphasizing the accounting cycle and principles used to produce financial statements.  Topics include accounting for a service and merchandising business, accounting careers, financial analysis and decision-making.  Students may purchase an accounting workbook for $20.

 

BDI3C: Entrepreneurship:  The Venture,  College    
This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their goals.  Through hands-on experiences, students will complete a self-analysis to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs. Students will create a venture plan for a student-run school-based business or event. There may be an optional field trip to a business centre.

 

BMI3C:  Marketing:  Goods, Services and Events, College
Students will explore the concepts of product marketing, which include the marketing mix. Trends, issues, and global and IT influences on consumer buying habits will be studied.  Students conduct marketing research, develop marketing strategies, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice.  May include an optional field trip to marketing centres in Toronto.

 

BTA3O: Information/Communication Technology:  The Digital Environment, Open         
Students are trained in advanced IT skills using a variety of industry-standard software. Case studies and real-life projects provide opportunities for students to design multimedia documents and web-based systems for local community businesses and organizations. This course sets successful BTA students apart from their peers in the competitive job market (and the potential for earning a MS-Office Specialist Certificate).

 

BOH4M: Business Leadership:  Management Fundamentals, University/College
This course is important for those students wishing to develop leadership skills and understand management techniques.  Students will analyze the role of a leader in business with a focus on decision-making, management and group dynamics, building strategy, motivation of employees, and planning.  Real case studies and hands-on applications are emphasized.
