Secondhand tabacco smoke is especially dangerous to children because of their body size and breathing rate. It can cause health problems such as asthma, ear infections, cancers and heart disease later in life. It has also been linked to sudden infant death syndrome. To protect all Ontario children, a new law came into effect January 21, 2009 that makes it illegal to smoke or hold lit tobacco in a vehicle carrying children under the age of 16. The health unit reminds all parents and caregivers to keep children safe by keeping vehicles smoke free. More information and support is available by calling your local health unit: |
